The 3rd running of the Irish St Leger was held on Wednesday 26th September 1917 over 1 mile 6 furlongs of The Curragh. The winner was owned by Mr W A Murray, trained by James Dunne at Osborne Lodge, Curragh, and ridden by Tommy Burns. A purse of £1500 allowed for the second to receive 50 sovereigns and the third 25 sovereigns. The winner won by 4 lengths in 3 minutes 21.6 seconds, with 12 lengths between second and third.

  Betting As the field broke it was left to Prince Lionel to make the early running ahead of First Flier, General Villa, Bachelor's Gift and Double Scotch settling in the rear. After half a mile First Flier and Double Scotch took closer order and, within a furlong, Prince Lionel was beaten. The favourite and Double Scotch started to stride clear of General Villa, with First Flier leading into the straight. Approaching the final two furlongs Double Scotch strode passed First Flier and won as he pleased by 4 lengths, with fully 12 lengths back to General Villa.
